Robert F. Fischer - Fischer Cunnane & Associates

Robert F. Fischer, CPA

Shareholder Emeritus

email: rfischer@fischercunnane.com

Bob knows what it takes to launch, finance and grow a successful business from scratch—because he’s done it. Over the past 40-plus years, he has built one of the Top 25 CPA firms in greater Philadelphia while advising successful businesses in industries ranging from banking to transportation.

So what’s Bob’s secret ingredient? Investing in smart, educated people who are committed to helping clients achieve their goals.

Bob has always done what’s right by his people. He started extending flextime arrangements in the early 1980s (long before most other accounting firms) as a way to retain employees trying to balance work and family commitments. Family issues come first, he stresses. And, when you get a good employee who is smart, you want to figure out how to keep them happy and motivated.

As a result of that track record of treating employees with respect and caring, Fischer Cunnane’s employees are fiercely loyal. In fact, many of them have been with the firm for decades, often since college.

Bob feels a tremendous sense of responsibility for each and every one of those employees—a shared sense of responsibility, that is. They are responsible for themselves, but I’m responsible for giving them a road to take that allows them to grow and prosper.

That sense of responsibility guided his decisions during his tenure as managing shareholder—including the continual pursuit of smart growth. That growth ultimately benefits clients because it creates opportunities for Fischer Cunnane’s people to gain diverse experiences serving a varied client base, elevating the level of their advisory skills.

Bob also is fiercely protective of his clients. He sees his role as keeping them on a railroad track that will lead them to their business and personal goals, and warning them away from sidetracks that can derail them. Sometimes those derailing forces come from the outside, such as an overbearing distributor, and sometimes they are internal, such as complex family dynamics.

Protecting his clients’ interests sometimes means giving them brutally honest advice, especially when they are blinded to the dangers that can accompany certain business decisions. Sometimes emotion can take over from common sense. You’ve got to help them see what makes the most sense from a business standpoint.

Bob’s advocacy for businesses extends beyond his firm’s client base. As Past Chairman of the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) and the Southeastern Economic Development Company of Pennsylvania (SEEDCO), Bob has championed changes that have resulted in providing businesses in southeastern Pennsylvania with greater access to Small Business Administration loans and other sources of capital. He also helped to revitalize some of Chester County’s urban communities by making financial and accounting services easily accessible through regional CCEDC satellite offices.

Bob considers both CCEDC and SEEDCO among the top economic development organizations in the country, because the people who make up their boards are committed to serving their constituents—just like the people of Fischer Cunnane. After all, Good people are involved with good organizations.
